Alice Louise King, born August 20, 1944, to Arthur (Babe) King, Jr., and Helen Marie (nee Adriance) King in the Dechairo Hospital, Westmoreland, Kansas, died April 29 at her residence at the Home of the Flint Hills, St. George, Kansas.
Alice grew up on the family farm southwest of Fostoria, Kansas with her two brothers Harold and Robert (Bob). She attended a two-room grade school in Fostoria through the fifth grade. She completed grade school and high school in Westmoreland. Education was important in the King family, Alice continued her education at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1965 she graduated, the same year that brothers Harold and Bob received degrees from their schools. Alice taught elementary school in Grand Junction, Colorado, before returning to Kansas, accepting a position as a librarian at Fort Riley military base. From 1987 to 2013, the last years of her career, Alice was the main editor at Master Teacher Inc. in Manhattan, Kansas.
Alice absolutely loved the rural and somewhat isolated life and purchased an acreage south of Westmorland not far from her childhood home. Wildlife in the area frequented her shady oasis and found to be well fed. Visitors included opossums, raccoons, quail, turkeys, other birds, and deer. Inevitably, one, two, or three barn cats milled around and often made their way into her house and heart.
Frugal though she was, she always gave the best gifts and the most appropriate cards to her friends and relations, spending hours looking for that “special one”. Bringing out a Scrabble board was a whole different story. She was a good, no-holds-barred F4O1E1. At family gatherings, you could count on her to bring the best cheese ball, crackers, and delicious deviled eggs. She gave the secret recipe to Sabine Ginavan (it’s the brine from the olive jar). Sabine is now the only person who knows that secret.
Growing up on the farm southwest of Fostoria, Alice developed a love for horseback riding. She and her best friend/neighbor, Julia Threewitt, spent many hours together on their horses. Young Alice was a member of the Westy Saddle Club.
Alice enjoyed the gatherings at the one room Sales School House in her neighborhood, which was just east of her parents first home. She loved auctions, doing a lot of browsing and occasionally placing and winning a bid.
Alice resided at the Home of the Flint Hills for the last six years of her life. The family expresses appreciation to the staff for taking good care of her during that time.
Mourning her loss, are her brothers Robert, (Wamego) and Harold (Emma) (Lakefield, Minnesota), her niece, Jennifer (Lee) Crane (Wamego), nephews Chris (Helen) King (Wamego), Todd King (Sabine Ginavan), Wamego; David and James King of Fairmont, Minnesota, and great nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death, her parents and sister-in-law Ann Gail (nee Wilson) King.
