Charles Douglas “Doug” Albert, 83, of Westmoreland, Kansas, formerly of Abilene, passed away Friday, January 23, 2026, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland. He was a native of California before moving to Kansas.
Doug was born March 13, 1942, in San Diego, California, the son of Charles and Loraine (DeCamp) Albert. He attended school in San Diego and then served 5 years in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Arizona and worked as an aircraft mechanic.
Doug worked for over 25 years for the California Forest and Parks Service. He loved nature and planting and caring for trees, not only in the Parks, but at home. Doug moved to Westmoreland, Kansas for a few years near family before buying a home and settling in Abilene, Kansas. He called Abilene home for seven years before coming back to Wellsprings in Westmoreland. Much like Abilene but maybe even more so in Wellsprings Doug has left a quiet void not only in our hearts but in so many others. If you let yourself get to know him you would find that he was a very loving, care and thought of others before himself.
Besides his love for nature, he also was very fond of his pets. Dogs, cats, or fish, they all were all special to him, but he especially loved greyhounds. Doug seemed to always own a Harley and loved the freedom of the road.
Doug is survived by his sister, Julia Grincewich, of Nevada and brother-in-law, Eugene Abitz, Onaga; his nieces Rachel Hougland (Daniel), Wamego, Rhonda Abitz (Michael Preston), Manhattan, Yvonne Wallace (Marvin), and nephews, Shawn Grincewich, and Christian Abitz (Jennifer Stillwell), Topeka.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, David Albert, Bruce Albert, and Ann Abitz.
Graveside services with military honors at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Manhattan, will be held at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the “Kansas City Retired Greyhounds as Pets” or “Greyhound Hall of Fame”.
