Donald Lee Winsor, born May 17, 1938, in Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.
Donald graduated from Wichita's North High School in June 1956. Shortly after, he joined the United States Navy, where he underwent boot camp in San Diego and served as a Medical Corpsman. His naval career took him to various locations, including San Diego's Balboa Naval Hospital, the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, Hawaii, Guam, and Treasure Island Naval Base near San Francisco. He was discharged from the Navy in 1960.
Following his military service, Donald moved back to Wichita and worked at Wesley Medical Center as a Scrub Tech. It was there that he met his future wife, Virginia Lee Hanneman, a student nurse training in the Surgery Unit. They married on May 13, 1962, at the Mennonite Brethren Church in Burns, Kansas.
Donald pursued further education, attending college part-time while working full-time for 11 years. During 10 and a half of those years, he served as a police officer in the Wichita Police Department. His roles included patrol officer, radar and motorcycle officer, traffic accident investigator, and Detective in the Crime Lab. He graduated from Wichita State University in 1973.
After leaving the police department, Donald dedicated 30 years to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), retiring on April 1, 2001. Throughout his career, Donald was known for his dedication and commitment to his work.
Donald was the son of Ralph E. Winsor and Stella Marie Bierman, both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, David Winsor, and his brother, LeRoy Winsor.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Lee Winsor; their son Daniel Winsor and his wife Stacey; brother-in-law Keith Hanneman and his wife Delores (and family); grandchildren, Brittany Poquette and her husband Nathan, Dalton Winsor, Chase Winsor, Katie Winsor, Kadan Winsor, and Koltan Winsor; and great-grandchildren Theodore Poquette and Olivia.
A visitation will be held at Trinity Baptist Church on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the same location beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held in the Wamego City Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested and may be made payable to the Samaritan's Purse and left in care of Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box 48, 66547.
