Freddie Harris Meyer, 88 of Alma, Kansas, died Nov 24, 2025, at the Heritage Home in Alma after an illness. He was a lifelong member of the Wabaunsee County Alma community.
Fred was born January 19, 1937, in rural Wabaunsee County on the farm, the son of Fredder and Malinda Steege-Meyer. He attended the local St John Lutheran school and graduated from Alma High School in 1955. He was baptized on February 28, 1937, and was confirmed on March 18, 1951.
He married JoAnn Hodge on November 25, 1962, in Alta Vista, Kansas. She preceded him in death. They had a daughter, Kathy Cox.
After graduation, Fred served in the Navy. He returned to Alma, where he worked with his brother, Warren, as a rancher, truck driver, and owner of Meyer Truck Line. He continued this work until he retired.
Fred served the City of Alma as a Council member and then served as the City Mayor from 1989 to 1997. Fred was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served in different roles as an usher and trustee.
Fred’s hobbies revolved around sports. In his younger years, he played fast-pitch softball and coached his daughter’s softball teams. He was an avid St Louis Cardinal fan and is a proud owner of a brick at Cardinal Stadium. He loved watching sports: Wabaunsee High, KSU wildcats, KU Jayhawks, St Louis Cardinals, KC Royals, and the Chiefs. He loved his annual guys’ trips to watch the Cardinals in St Louis. He was very proud of his daughter and his grandchildren and spent countless hours driving to various practices and attending their sporting events. Every year, he would take them on a vacation to explore somewhere in Kansas or to St Louis for a ball series.
In retirement, he enjoyed watching sports, spending time with his friends at the coffee shop, and driving backroads, checking on the properties. He loved taking his great-granddaughters out for a treat down to stop 2 shop.
Fred loved his family, going to their events and spending holidays together. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Cox, and her husband, Chris Cox of Alma; Grandchildren, Heather Wealthall and husband Dustin of Alma; Eric Cox and wife Nichole, Belvue; great-grandchildren: Dryden, Berkli, Ellinor, Meyer Jane, Reece, Dylan, and Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers (Warren & Arleen Meyer, Chester and Eleanor Meyer), his Sisters (Esther Sweeney and Amanda and Carl Brase), his brother and sisters-in-law (Arthur and Virginia Zeckser, Vernon and Jo Zeckser, Ervan and Mary Lois Zeckser, Rosemary and Bill Brown).
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 28th, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma with Reverend Robert Grimm officiating. Refreshments will be served following the service until 4:00 p.m., where you can share memories of Freddie and greet family and friends. Memorial contributions in memory of Freddie can be made payable to St. John Lutheran Church or School, or to The Heritage Home in Alma and left in care of Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
