Gregory Henry Platt

  Gregory Henry Platt, known as Greg, 66, passed away on August 2, 2025, at his home in Wamego, Kansas.

  Greg was born on May 13, 1959, in Denver, Colorado, to parents Lawrence Glenn and Bonnie Dora (Gottlieb) Platt.

  Greg began his illustrious military career in the enlisted Army National Guard of Kansas in 1976 at the young age of 16, with the consent of his parents. Over the years, his devoted service took him overseas to Germany, as well as to deployed locations in Afghanistan and Bosnia. He became a respected leader, spending time training and serving at various military forts across Kansas, New York, Georgia, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. In 1991, he was commissioned as an officer after graduating from Officer Candidate School as a Distinguished Graduate. Among his many achievements, he was particularly proud to have earned three Bronze Star Medals and a Legion of Merit Medal. After 37 years of dedicated service, Greg honorably retired from the military in June of 2013, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist and Instructor.

  Outside of his military accomplishments, Greg was a passionate gun collector and enthusiast, which contributed to his ability to earn the Army Sharpshooter Badge. He cherished the camaraderie and memories created with his “Man Camp” group of friends, where they enjoyed camping and shooting together. Greg’s compassion extended beyond his military service, as he dedicated time to support others through his involvement with the Big Brother and Big Sister organization, American Legion, and Wounded Warrior Project.

  Greg is survived by his spouse, Brett Stewart-Platt, and children Autumn Platt-Cangelosi (Brandon) of Littleton, Colorado; Hendley Brook Carson (John) of Manhattan, Kansas; Michael Ames Howard II of Manhattan, Kansas; and Piper Howard Deans (Jay) of Olathe, Kansas. Greg was a proud grandfather to Maddox Stockebrand, Rowan Stockebrand, Lawson Deans, Harlan Deans, Halsey Deans, Henley Deans, Sophie Cangelosi, Aliey Cangelosi, and Izzy Cangelosi. Also mourning Greg’s loss are numerous nieces and nephews, and his faithful four-legged service dog, Valkyrie.

  Greg is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Geoffrey Platt, as well as his cherished service dog, LuLu.

  A memorial service will be held on August 22, 2025, at Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. In honor of Greg’s military service, please wear the colors red, white, and blue. Following the memorial service, attendees are invited to a luncheon at the Wamego Methodist Church. Afterwards, Greg will be laid to rest with the Fort Riley Army Detail and the American Legion Post 172 performing Military Honors at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas, at 2:00 p.m.
