Janice Lee Diepenbrock, 85, of Alma, Kansas, died Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at her home. She was a long-time resident of the community.
Jan was born on August 19, 1936, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of John and Marian (McChesney) Fernstrom. She grew up in North Topeka and attended local grade schools. Jan graduated from Topeka High School in 1954. She then attended Washburn University and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority.
Jan married Robert Diepenbrock on March 29, 1957, in Topeka. After sixty-four years of marriage, Bob survives at their home. Jan and Bob moved from Overland Park to Alma in 1972 where they built their home on the family farm.
Jan worked for the State of Kansas for eleven years as a sales tax clerk. She also worked several years in the Alma school cafeteria and as a substitute teacher. From 1978 until 1984, Jan owned and operated the Der eis Laden ice cream and coffee shop.
She was very active in the community and played the organ for over thirty years at her church, Alma United Methodist and also at Peace United Church of Christ. Jan was an accomplished pianist and loved to play at the Alma Manor and visit with ones who were homebound. She loved to read, enjoyed playing various board games with her family and playing cards in many card groups. She loved her Bunco Group so much that her dog was named Bunco. Jan loved attending her Thursday morning coffee clutch. She was an amazing mom and grandma (Baba), and a precious wife. She loved and enjoyed life and will always be remembered for her beautiful smile.
Jan is also survived by her children; Daniel Diepenbrock (Paula), Liberal, Brenda Moffitt (John), South Carolina, and Paul Diepenbrock (DeAnn), Halstead; her grandchildren, George Diepenbrock (Lindsey) and their children, Will and Neve, Ted Diepenbrock (Lindsey), and their children, Leigh and Graham, Margaret Porter (Nicholas), Jacob Moffitt (Elizabeth), Abner Diepenbrock (Rachel) and their son, Cash, and Marci Diepenbrock; her twin brother John Fernstrom (Ruth) (Sarasota, FL) and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Jan was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Thomas Moffitt, and her sister, Jean Culp.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the Alma United Methodist Church. Reverend Kyle Scheideman will be officiating. Inurnment will be held in Fairview Cemetery at a later date. The family will greet friends on Friday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, at the church. They suggest memorial contributions to Alma United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association and may be sent in care of Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home.
