Margie C. Hosler, age 98, passed away peacefully at her home in Wamego, Kansas, on March 28, 2026.
Born on May 11, 1927, in Freiburg, Germany, Margie carried with her a deep appreciation for her heritage and a spirit that touched all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She was the daughter of Otto and Cecilia Goettle. Margie’s early years were shaped by the rich traditions of her homeland, where she attended school and cultivated a love for the arts and orderliness. Her passion for painting and decorating reflected her artistic nature and desire to bring beauty and comfort into her surroundings; she loved to welcome the changing seasons with thoughtful touches throughout her home.
Margie’s journey took a profound turn when she met her husband in Germany. Together, they ventured to America in 1948, a testament to her courage and hope for a new life. Margie proudly obtained her American citizenship, embracing her new home with dedication. She later married Lyle Hosler, who preceded her in death on September 24, 2010.
Her career was marked by a steadfast commitment to service and care. In Germany, she served as an assistant to the mayor, a role that highlighted her organizational skills and community spirit. Upon settling in America, she devoted 25 years to working for chiropractor Dr. Jim Divine, alongside invaluable time caring for hospital residents, always extending her compassion to others. Even in retirement, Margie continued to give by volunteering at the Wamego History Museum until the impressive age of 90, underscoring her enduring dedication to preserving the past and engaging with her community.
Those who knew Margie fondly remember her Zopt in German, which she pronounced "zupt" and a brioche that was braided chocolate bread, a generous offering that was as much a part of her identity as her warmth and thoughtfulness. She was a giving person, continually considering the needs and happiness of friends and family before her own. Baking and cooking were not merely hobbies but expressions of her love and connection to her heritage.
Survived by her children, Ava Cornelius, Jeanette Lindsey, and Bryan Hosler, she is also survived by family members in Germany.
Preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Hosler, and her parents, Otto and Cecilia Goettle.
A special thank you to all of Mother's caregivers from Heartland In-Home Care, and to Darla Wilson, longtime friend and nurse for Dr. Webb. Thank you to Maddie at Phoenix Hospice. She made my mom comfortable at the end because of their nurses and wonderful care, and Franz Bullinger, my mother's friend and companion after my dad's passing. He provided support to my father and mother. Germans stick together and seldom lose their accent.
A visitation will be held on May 11, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, followed by a celebration of life from 11:00 AM at Trinity Baptist Church of Wamego, located at 16655 U.S. 24 in Wamego, Kansas.
